Three Kings Quarry

Rehabilitation and Redevelopment

While existing resource consents authorise further excavation of the quarry down to sea-level or 0m RL, Winstone Aggregates intends ceasing excavation at about 30m RL while progressively backfilling the quarry pit.

Winstone first informed the community of this possibility at an ACC Mt Roskill Community Board meeting on 21 November 2006 (see minutes at www.aucklandcity.govt.nz) and at a Site Liaison Group (SLG) meeting the following week on 29 November 2006.

To enable filling of the quarry, Winstone requires consents from both Auckland, City and Regional, Councils. These consents will not change the existing planning environment, which is that quarrying is effectively the only authorised land use.  While rehabilitation requires consent it is a logical first step post-quarrying. However the site would have to be rezoned and most likely require further resource consents before any other use or development would be permitted.

Some general information about this proposal was distributed in two information flyers letter dropped in October 2007 and September 2008 to about 6,000 properties in the vicinity of the quarry. Recipents interested in being kept informed about the quarry and development proposals were invited to register their details with Winstone, and to attend SLG meetings.  Presentations updating SLG members about the project have been made, and distributed in the minutes of all SLG meetings since November 2006.

Applications for all necessary resource consents were lodged with both Councils in February 2009 and their progress is discussed on the Consent Applications page.
