Site Liaison Group (SLG)

The Winstone Aggregates Three Kings Quarry site is zoned Business 7 by the operative District Plan (ODP) of the Auckland City Council (ACC) therefore, subject to Plan rules quarrying is permitted. During the evolution of the ODP, it was agreed by consent between South Epsom Planning Group Inc., Winstone Aggregates and ACC that a management plan for the operation of the quarry should be developed by the quarry operator in consultation with a Site Liaison Group (SLG). This agreement was confirmed by consent order of the Environment Court.

The SLG includes representatives from ACC and the local community. Its objectives are to provide a forum where relevant matters about the quarry's operations and any development plans can be raised and discussed with a view to the resolution of issues and to achieve ongoing good relations and mutual trust between quarry management and the local community.

Winstone Aggregates operates its Three Kings Quarry in accordance with a Quarry Management Plan which is   reviewed regularly, and when necessary updated in consultation with the SLG. Conditions of some of the resource consents listed in the Quarry Management Plan require regular monitoring and reporting to the consent authority. This monitoring is also reported to the SLG and is posted to this Document Management System on a site monitoring page.

The SLG meets about every three months and meeting notes and minutes are recorded, distributed to attendees and also posted to this Document Management System. The SLG is open to all interested parties. To register contact us, or write to Three Kings Quarry SLG, Winstone Aggregates, PO Box 17-195, Greenlane, Auckland.

Other Community Involvement

The quarry, like other Winstone Aggregates sites, has held regular public open days and at times special information open days. At these days members of the public, particularly neighbours, are invited to view the quarry and how effects or potential effects are managed. The most recent open day was in February 2008.

Specific site measures have been implemented to improve visual as well as operational aspects. One example is the earth bund or embankment constructed, then landscaped, fenced, and planted to not only present a pleasant "face" to Mt Eden Rd, but also to enhance noise and dust management procedures. See cross - section A - A' on the planting proposal (PDF 71.2 KB) plan.

Winstone Managers also have discretionary authority or can seek more senior management approval to support community activities, particularly those involving aspects of youth, (education and health) and/or environment.

Beyond the boundary of the site, significant contributions of time and materials have been made to the neighbouring Three Kings Primary School. These have included the security gate and the paths to, and around, the school's swimming pool. The quarry has also sponsored Waikowhai Intermediate School's "Trees for Survival" unit.
