There’s no denying our industry has the potential to significantly impact the environment. At Winstones Aggregates we understand that the only limitless resource is innovation, so we constantly look for ways to re-use, recycle and re-shape products. We also make stringent efforts to minimise the effects of quarrying, roading and construction, going the extra mile beyond compliance.

How do Winstone Aggregates minimise environmental impact?

  • We have established and adhere to an Environment Policy (PDF 41KB)
  • We operate an Environmental Management System that is modeled on ISO 14001
  • Our reporting systems ensure that regulations are met or exceeded
  • We are the first company of our kind in New Zealand to have a Biodiversity Action Plan (PDF 1.4MB)

Sites have robust systems that identify environmental effects, allocate responsibilities and report performance but individual responsibility rules. Employees are trained and expected to consider how their work impacts the surroundings and how they can do better, such as calling in the water truck when roads get dusty or slowing down when driving around homes – simple, common-sense ideas that make a big difference.

Leaving a Lighter Footprint

We take a long-term view of our effects on the environment: "look after today and you look after tomorrow". It’s not just a matter of finishing an operation then packing our bags. Each site has a rehabilitation strategy which includes replanting native bush, re-shaping the land or backfilling it to create ponds and pasture. As a business with large land holdings, we are able to make a net positive contribution to the environment - fencing, pest and weed control, and a Biodiversity Action Plan, are key parts of this initiative. With the right sort of encouragement, trees, birds, bees and aquatic life can be sustained, improving our human foot print.
