For almost 150 years Winstone Aggregates’ quarries have provided the bedrock for building a nation, from the first pioneering roads to today’s highways. Later the company supplied product for iconic structures such as the Harbour Bridge, Wellington’s Beehive and the Auckland Sky Tower.

The company traces its roots to young entrepreneur William Winstone who, in 1864, set up a haulage business that transported goods to a young but growing country. Winstone Aggregates, part of the Fletcher Building Group, is now New Zealand’s largest supplier of aggregates with 26 locations nationwide. Annually we extract 4.5 million cubic metres from the ground. That’s one loaded truck and trailer leaving one of our quarries every 35 seconds.

1864 Brothers William and George Winstone begin delivering coal and firewood by horse and cart through the streets of Auckland. The company develops with the early colony manufacturing, trading and distributing building materials. At one stage the Winstone Stable houses over 300 horses.
Winstones’ soon develop their own supply of aggregate from hard rock quarries, scoria pits and coastal sand and gravel resources.

1936 Winstone Aggregates establishes the Mt Wellington Quarry with a view to replacing the company’s city quarries. After 64 years Mt Wellington becomes the largest quarry in New Zealand, manufacturing much of the high quality aggregate used in the Auckland region.

1950-1960 Winstone Aggregates diversifies into masonry and the manufacture of ready-mixed concrete and the company expands into the South Island.

1988 The Winstone Group of Companies is purchased by Fletcher Challenge Limited who already have a significant investment in the quarrying and ready-mixed concrete industries through their Firth Industries division. The merger of the quarrying interests of Firth and Winstone creates the largest aggregate manufacturing company in New Zealand.

1990-1999 Winstone Aggregates continues to expand their quarry and sand operations and opens two sites in the South Island.

2000 Winstone Aggregates becomes a part of Fletcher Building Limited, after Fletcher Challenge Limited separates their letter stock companies (Fletcher Energy, Fletcher Forest and Fletcher Building). Fletcher Building Limited lists on the New Zealand, Australian, and US stock exchanges.

Today Winstone Aggregates is New Zealand's largest aggregate company with 26 quarries nationwide and extracts 4.5 million cubic metres of aggregate from the ground every year for roading, building and industry. A loaded truck and trailer leaves a Winstone Aggregates quarry every 35 seconds.
