For the first time in a number of years, residents of Three Kings and neighbouring suburbs will get the opportunity to check out operations at Winstone Aggregates Three Kings Quarry.

Winstone Aggregates, which has operated the quarry for more than 85 years, is holding an open day on Saturday 16 February and local residents are invited to look at the existing operation and use the opportunity to check out the company's proposed plans for the site.

Quarry manager, Tony Carpenter, says community open days at the company's quarries have proved extremely popular. "There is always a high level of interest in what the quarry does, how it operates and the way in which it works with the local community."

"The Three Kings Quarry has a long and interesting history, however today it operates in a quite different environment from when it first began life as a quarry," said Mr Carpenter. "The close proximity of homes and businesses means we are continually striving to ensure we operate using the best environmental management practices."

"The open day is an opportunity for the local community to meet our staff and see first hand the initiatives we have implemented which recognize the sensitivity of the urban environment in which we operate."

Winstone Aggregates Three Kings Quarry received a Highly Commended in the Sustainable Business section of Auckland Regional Council's 2007 Sustainable Environmental Awards, having previously received two awards for environmental excellence from industry organisations.

Mr Carpenter said the company hopes locals will make the day a family event and that there will be a range of fun activities for children as well as adults including the chance to operate a mini digger, heavy machinery displays and a "guess the weight of the rock" competition.

The quarry will be open from 9.00am to 1.00pm on February 16.
