Positive feedback from previous open days has encouraged Winstone Aggregates to hold a community day at its Hunua Quarry on Saturday 23 February from 9.00am to 1.00pm.

The open day provides locals with an opportunity to check out operations at the quarry and talk with Winstone's staff about the proposed development of a new extraction area.

Quarry manager, John MacAulay, said the previous open day, held in 2006, attracted more than 300 people and demonstrated the high level of interest in what the quarry does, how it operates and the way in which it works with the local community.

"The Hunua Quarry has been part of the local community for more than 50 years and our popular open days are just one of the many ways in which we work alongside local residents, schools, businesses and organizations," said Mr MacAulay.

"Our most recent initiative has been to support the construction of a climbing wall for the Papakura Community Centre which provides a healthy, physical activity for the community with links to Winstone's core business - rocks."

Mr MacAulay said the open day is also a great opportunity for locals to meet the company's staff and see first hand many of the environmental initiatives they have implemented. "We try to make the day a family event and there will be a range of activities including mini van tours of the quarry, two mini-excavators set up for a hands-on experience, and a sausage sizzle for anyone who missed breakfast."
