Auckland's Three Kings quarry has been recycling concrete to produce PAP10 and a 22mm-19mm graded chip, used in New Zealand's first Green Star rated concrete pour.
A rating system established by the New Zealand Green Building Council, Green Star provides a standard of measurement for 'green' buildings and the environmental impact of their development.
Three Kings' graded chip product was used to produce Green Star rated concrete for a new high-tech five storied building at the UniversityofWaikato. The $25 million building, designed by architects Warren and Mahoney is being built by Fletcher Construction. Consisting of a library and student centre, the building has been designed to achieve a high level of performance when measured against the New Zealand Green Building Council rating system.
Energy features includeNew Zealand's largest building-mounted vertical wind turbine on the roof (to generate electricity) 50kw of photo-voltaic panels (to convert sunlight into energy), and a solar panel array. This will allow the building to produce up to 30% of its own energy and be 100% self sufficient for all hot water requirements. The building also uses recycled materials for carpet, lighting, ceiling tiles and furniture and rainwater collection systems.
